GoPro’s rugged action cameras are popular because they allow users to capture video from virtually any angle without getting in the way. For example a snowboarder can mount a GoPro on top of the helmet and record video through the point-of-view angle while hitting the slopes and without having to hold the camera. So far there hasn’t been a way to beam such video over live TV. Footage has to be extracted from the camera and then added into a broadcast but this will change soon. GoPro has announced support for live TV broadcast.
For this purpose GoPro has partnered with Vislink. A wireless transmitter will be provided for the GoPro HERO4 cameras which will enable live, broadcast-grade video. This transmitter is small enough that it can be worn or mounted on various equipment, allowing TV producers to play around with the angles.
This wireless HD transmitter will be shown off during several events such as the ESPN Winter X Games 2015 Aspen from January 22-25 as well as at select AMA Monster Energy Supercross events.
Availability and pricing information for this wireless transmitter has not been provided by GoPro yet, so we’ll have to wait for that, but the company expects to start selling it by spring this year.
