If you’re in the market for sensors that you can use with your smartphone, there is a Kickstarter project for a device called the Kalt that you might be interested in. Kalt is a sensor that basically plugs into your smartphone’s headphone jack and it has the ability to detect the temperature, essentially making it a non-contact thermometer.

It detects the temperature via infrared energy that an object emits and converts that reading into a measurement that we are familiar with, either in Celsius or Kelvin. It seems relatively straightforward and easy to use as the user will just need to point the Kalt in the direction of the object they’re trying to measure and they’re good to go.

There will also be an accompanying app that will be able to display a graph that can track the temperature as it changes over a period of time. The readings can also be stored in a file so that you can access to it later. As it stands the creators are planning both an iOS and Android app, so BlackBerry and Windows Phone users are out of luck.

For those who are interested in getting their hands on the device, the Kalt Kickstarter project is currently sitting at close to $7,000 making it a little over $3,000 shy of its $9,999 goal. If you’d like to pledge your support or learn more, head on over to its Kickstarter page for the details.
