Google tapped into a market with unexpected demand with the Chromecast which is why it was surprised when orders exceeded its expectations. The $35 HDMI streaming dongle has been very successful in the market and even though Google never formally announced sales figures it didn’t take much to figure out that this was one of the most popular streaming sticks available in the market. A report out of Korea reveals that Google Chromecast sales have crossed 10 million units.

Korea Times reports today that Google’s arm in the country has shared sales figures of its streaming stick. More than 10 million Chromecast units were sold globally last year.

An important distinction has to be made here. 10 million units were sold which means a greater number had been shipped to retailers. This figure represents the units that have actually be sold to end users and are not lying on a retailer’s shelves.

Chromecast is a relatively simple device that adds “smart” features to a TV. It allows users to cast content from their devices to their TVs. Apps and services run on the Chromecast as well so there’s really no shortage of content.

At last count some 300+ apps and services were available for Chromecast and Google says that more than 6,000 developers are working on over 10,000 apps for iOS, Android and Chrome that are cast-enabled.
