Microsoft has revealed its third quarter earnings today. The company announced $21.7 billion as revenue for the three-month tenure, which ended on March 31, 2015, with net total income of $4.99 billion. When compared to the same quarter last year, the revenue seems to have gone up, but the net income was down. The company also revealed that the sales of Xbox consoles, hardware and peripherals has witnessed a bump.

A total of 1.6 million Xbox consoles were sold during the quarter, which is a stark decline of 2 million when compared to the same quarter in 2014. The company said that the Xbox platform revenue decreased $306 million for the quarter, which can also be based on the decrease in console volume and lower prices of Xbox One consoles compared to the previous year. Microsoft slashed the price of Xbox One to $349 in January for the holiday promotion.

Xbox and Surface revenue

On the whole, Microsoft explained that the decrease in Xbox revenues was somewhat balanced by the increase in Surface sales. Moreover, the revenue from computing and gaming hardware was down $72 million for the quarter.

Microsoft’s current fiscal year (nine months), it said that the Xbox platform revenue was down $471 million compared to the same period last year. During the initial nine months of the financial year 2015, the company said that it sold 10.7 million Xbox consoles, in comparison to 10.6 million in the same period in 2014.

Regardless of decreasing quarterly sales and revenue, Microsoft boasted of Xbox Live usage in a press release, it stated,”Xbox Live usage grew over 30 percent, driven by increased users and deeper user engagement,” the company said.
