windows_dvd_player_appIt would seem that with Microsoft giving Windows 10 away as a free upgrade for genuine users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, they need some way to make money and we saw that earlier with Microsoft attempting to charge a subscription for playing Solitaire if you want to remove the ads from the game.

Now it turns out Microsoft wants to charge you for playing DVDs as well as it was recently discovered by the folks at Windows Central that the official DVD Player app is available for purchase via the Windows Store for a whopping $14.99. That being said if you are coming from an upgrade from Windows 7 (any version) or Windows 8.1, the app will be available in your update for free.

However for everyone else the app will cost you $14.99. This is rather pricey for a somewhat simple app, and let’s not forget that there are plenty of free alternatives online. One such example would be none other than VideoLAN’s VLC media player which is not only free, but will work with DVDs and other kinds of media formats.

In any case for those who want to get their hands on the app for whatever reason, you can do so by heading on over to the Windows Store for the download.
