Remember earlier this year towards the end of March, both Google and ASUS announced the Chromebit? The original plan for the device was that it would be launched in the summer of 2015, but given that we’re nearly towards the end of the year, safe to say that neither ASUS nor Google managed to make the intended summer release.
The good news is that you won’t have to wait anymore because the Chromebit has officially gone on sale. It is expected to be made available via Amazon, Fry’s, and Newegg where as Google promised, it would retail for under $100 and it looks like Google kept their word as the device is priced at $85.
At this time of writing the device has yet to appear on either retailers’ website, but it should be making an appearance soon so you’ll want to keep an eye out for it. Apart from a launch in the US, the Chromebit is also expected to make its way to Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the UK.
Now for those unfamiliar with the Chromebit, the device connects to your TV via HDMI. It should not be confused with the Chromecast which does the same thing, but rather it is more identical to the Intel Compute Stick. The Chromebit runs Chrome OS, so basically it is a computer on a stick that relies on your TV to act as its monitor. If you’re not a particularly heavy user and just want to surf the net, then we reckon the Chromebit should be a very affordable option.
