If you own a Pixel 6 or newer, this week’s update can help protect you from chat scams without buying a new phone. Google’s September 15, 2026 Pixel Drop makes it easier to spot suspicious messages in two related ways, according to Google’s Pixel blog and Pixel Phone Help.
What’s in it for you? First, chat-notification Scam Detection can flag a suspicious message when the notification arrives, before you open the thread. Expanded alerts can show a red warning and a Likely scam control so you can read why it was flagged, mark Done, or mark Not a scam.
Second, if you are in the United States, the same family of protection can also appear while you type: a Likely scam warning in Gboard (Google’s keyboard app) when you start replying in select apps, so the phone interrupts you mid-reply, not only at first glance.
Where it expands. Notification Scam Detection first arrived for Pixel 6 and newer in the US in the November 2025 Pixel Drop. The September 2026 Drop expands that notification protection to more regions. Coverage commonly lists Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, and the United Kingdom; Google’s support page also lists Spain. The mid-reply Gboard warning is US only, per Google.
What to do now. Check for the staged September Pixel Drop system update. Confirm Settings > Security and privacy > More security and privacy > Scam Detection, and leave Message scams on (Google says it is on by default). If a Likely scam warning appears, pause before tapping links or sending money or personal data.
This is a Pixel phone feature, not Android-wide, and it is not the separate call Scam Detection in the Phone app. Google warns Scam Detection is not 100 percent accurate and will not catch every scam. Support says the feature analyzes new message notifications from supported apps (and, in the US, can also warn when using the keyboard in select apps).
Update, leave Message scams on, and treat every Likely scam warning as a reason to slow down.
