microsoft_cellular_dataOne of the more lesser known things about Apple’s iPads with cellular connectivity is that they feature a special SIM card in the form of the Apple SIM. Basically this lets users sign up with different carriers without having to bother getting a new SIM card and all that jazz, which is admittedly a more convenient solution.

Now according to the folks at The Verge, it seems that there is a possibility that Microsoft could be building their own SIM card as well. This was discovered thanks to a cellular data app that was published to the Windows Store. According to the app’s description, it seems that this app allows users to stay connected wherever they go even without WiFi by connecting to a “trusted nationwide mobile data network”.

It also mentions that this will require a Microsoft SIM card in order for it to work and that it will only work with Windows 10 devices. There is even suggestion that international roaming could be available soon. From what we can tell, it sounds like Microsoft could be creating a network of carrier partners that lets users connect to them regardless of whether you have an account with that carrier, as long as you have a Microsoft account.

Chances are you might have to pay for it, but Microsoft has yet to officially announce their plans for the service so at the moment, it’s really anyone’s guess as to what it could be, but it definitely sounds interesting and we’ll be looking forward to more information about it.
