Sprint has been struggling to maintain its position in the market and it looks like the next phase of its plan to fix that involves opening up to 500 new stores across the country. The carrier confirmed today that it’s going to open up to 500 new Sprint-branded stores across the United States. It’s going to team up with a leading European wireless retailer, Dixons Carphone, to open up these stores.

Under this joint venture Sprint and Dixons Carphone will open and operate up to 500 new Sprint-branded stores in the United States. They’ve reached this agreement following a successful pilot program last year which showed good results. An increase in sales performance and customer satisfaction ratings was noticed.

Sprint says that this joint venture is going to help fuel its retail transformation including the expansion of its retail network in the country. It’s going to build and operate the new stores in partnership with Dixons Carphone, both companies will fund the startup costs of this joint venture equally and will retain a 50 percent ownership interest.

Whether or not this planned retail expansion ends up doing Sprint any good remains to be seen. The carrier has certainly seen some indication from the pilot test it conducted to take such a big gamble, operating up to 500 new stores won’t be easy, but at least, it will be creating thousands of new jobs all over the country.
