phone_explodes_mid_flightThe idea of our smartphones catching on fire and exploding isn’t new and unfortunately it happens more often than we’d like. There are of course many reasons why phones explode, sometimes it can be a serious mechanical defect, but sometimes it can also be due to users using chargers that aren’t approved which can sometimes mess with the power supplied, which in turn can cause batteries to overheat and explode.

That being said, we’re not sure what happened in this case but according to a report from KOMO News, a girl’s iPhone burst into flames mid-flight during a trip to Hawaii. According to Anna Crail the girl in question, she was watching a movie when suddenly she noticed that flames started to shoot out of her phone.

According to Crail, “When it started I thought we were going down, and I was like, ‘oh my god, there’s a fire on the plane.’ All of the sudden there was like 8-inch flames coming out of my phone, and I flipped it off onto the ground and it got under someone’s seat, and the flames were just getting higher and a bunch of people stood up.”

Thankfully Alaska Air’s crew are apparently trained for situations like this (we’re guessing fires, not phones exploding), and the fire was quickly put out without further issue.
