oculus-home

Oculus has started shipping its first virtual reality headset. Company founder Palmer Luckey went all the way to Alaska to personally deliver the first unit to a customer. As units start arriving for customers, the company has confirmed one important aspect of the business that’s important for both players and developers. It’s going to allow developers to sell their Oculus Rift games on other platforms as well so they won’t just be limited to the Oculus platform.

For players, this means that the Oculus Store won’t be the only place where they can purchase VR titles from. They can even purchase it directly from developers if they are willing to sell directly to players.

In a post on its official blog, the company said that it has designed the Oculus platform and store to provide the best VR experience and content and that it recognizes people will want to use apps that are not available on the Oculus platform or the store.

Developers will be allowed to sell outside the Oculus Store and if they prefer they can use their own IAP, Oculus won’t take a cut from those sales. Developers can also request royalty free keys to sell their Oculus PC app on other stores like Steam. So if players purchase a game from Steam, the developer can request keys to provide to players so that they can launch the game from inside the Oculus home screen.
