macbook teardown

Last week Apple took the wraps off their latest refresh in MacBooks. Note that this is for the 12-inch model and while on the outside the laptops look the same, under the hood there are obvious improvements to its hardware. However that’s not all because thanks to a teardown by iFixit (via MacRumors), it seems that Apple has done more than just give it a speed boost.

According to their teardown, Apple has included tamper-evident screws in the new MacBook. The Torx hinge screws are now filled with a tamper-evident substance that will disintegrate when you attempt to insert a screwdriver in it. We suppose this is done to prove that you have not messed about with your laptop when you try to send it in to claim warranty.

In addition, Apple has also changed the USB-C hardware by affixing it permanently to the USB board, making it different from 2015’s model. The new battery in the updated MacBooks also don’t look too different from last year’s model, and given that it’s supposed to last longer, it has been suggested that we’re probably looking at improved battery chemistry.

That being said at the end of the day with all these changes, iFixit has given that laptop a 1 out of 10 in terms of repairability. This means should anything go wrong and you are not covered under warranty, be prepared to pay big time for it.
