note s pen patentThe side displays on Samsung’s series of Edge handsets are useful because they can contain icons and shortcuts that could be kept separate from the main screen, thus not getting in your way. It also provides access to controls to adjust volume and playback for music and videos, and overall it’s pretty handy.

However what if future Edge handsets could support the S Pen? Is that something you might be interested in? According to a recently discovered Samsung patent, it seems that Samsung has toyed with the idea of creating an Edge phone in which the side displays could be drawn on and interacted with using an S Pen, a feature that is typically related to its Galaxy Note series.

Unfortunately at the moment it is unclear as to what this feature will allow users to do, but it is possible that maybe the sides of the display will be always-on, meaning that users can scribble notes like phone numbers or addresses on the side display without having to unlock their phone or launch an app.

It could also be used for drawing apps where the side could be used to select different drawing tools, like a pen, brush, pencil, etc., or maybe select from a color palette. In any case it’s an intriguing idea but what do you guys think? What sort of useful features can you think of with such a setup?
