Samsung announced during its recent Unpacked event that the Galaxy Ring will soon feature sleep apnea risk detection. The technology company highlighted that upon the tool’s rollout later this year, the Galaxy Ring will become the first and only over-the-counter smart ring to receive FDA clearance for monitoring sleep apnea risk.
The announcement was made by Sharanya Desai, Samsung’s digital health lead, during a presentation focused on Samsung Health and the Galaxy Watch line. The upcoming feature aims to track health metrics during sleep to identify potential indicators of moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, providing users with actionable health insights.
Despite the regulatory clearance, the feature is designed primarily for wellness tracking and screening rather than formal clinical diagnosis. Samsung emphasized that the device is intended to alert users to potential health irregularities so they can seek professional medical evaluation.
If the ring detects signs consistent with sleep apnea, users are advised to consult a healthcare provider for comprehensive testing and official medical treatment.
While Samsung did not disclose a specific release date for the software update, the functionality is expected to launch in the fall or before the end of the year.
Several competing wearable devices currently offer basic sleep-tracking and oxygen-monitoring capabilities, but none possess FDA clearance specifically for sleep apnea screening in a smart ring form factor.
This regulatory distinction positions the Galaxy Ring as a unique entry in the consumer health and wearable technology market.
