It seems that Microsoft really, really wants users to upgrade to Windows 10. The company has already annoyed many users through a variety of ways, whether it be the constant notifications, or the “accidental” automatic upgrades. Now it looks like there are reports of a new “trick” that we’re sure will outrage many Windows users.According to a variety of reports, it seems that when users are prompted by the pop-up notification informing them of the upgrade, clicking the red “X” button will actually begin the upgrade process instead of closing the box. No doubt this has caused confusion to users as many, for decades, have equated clicking the “X” to mean no or to cancel.
Apparently the pop-up window is just meant to serve as a reminder of when your upgrade will begin, so clicking the “X” really just means you’re dismissing the notification. According to Microsoft support, “This notification means your Windows 10 upgrade will occur at the time indicated, unless you select either Upgrade now or ‘Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade’. If you click on OK or on the red ‘X’, you’re all set for the upgrade and there is nothing further to do.”
The good news is that you can change your scheduled upgrade or cancel it, but like we said, this will be confusing for users who thought that simply clicking the “X” meant that they cancelled it. In any case more details can be found on Microsoft’s support page, so if you have clicked the “X” recently and you don’t want to upgrade to Windows 10, you better check out the scheduler to make sure.
In the meantime Windows 10 will stop being a free upgrade come July where it will be priced at $119.
