currentcWhen Apple Pay was first announced, it was understandable that many were skeptical and were wary of allowing Apple to gain a foothold, which is why we saw the likes of CurrentC launched as an Apple Pay alternative. However it looks like the service won’t be launched anytime soon as MCX has announced that further releases will be postponed.

The payments system has been undergoing beta tests but according to a recent email that MCX has sent out to current beta testers it reads, “We will be concluding our beta test and postponing further releases of CurrentC on June 28, 2016. Therefore, June 28th will be the last day that transactions will be accepted using CurrentC.”

It is unclear as to when CurrentC will launch, but in the meantime many have taken this to mean that CurrentC is effectively dead in the water. However since the company has not said anything to that effect, it is possible that CurrentC will still launch in the future. It was originally announced back in 2014, but even in 2015 its release was pegged for 2016.

Naturally this has given Apple the chance to sign on more partners in terms of retailers and also banks, which means that if and when CurrentC does launch, as it stands there really does not appear to be any incentive for users to switch over to the service. Last we heard, MCX had laid off about 30 employees last month which admittedly doesn’t sound too good.
