For the past few months, it has been rumored that Google is going to introduce two new Nexus smartphones this year and that both of them will be manufactured by HTC. While nothing has been officially confirmed the rumor mill appears to be convinced that this is how it’s going to be in 2016. A new report out of South Africa contradicts popular belief, quoting a Huawei executive as saying that the Chinese manufacturer will be “doing the Nexus again this year.”

GearBurn’s report features a statement from Huawei’s head of consumer business in South Africa who says that Huawei will be making the Nexus again this year.

The statement has not been backed up by Huawei yet, or Google for that matter, even though both companies worked on a Nexus handset just last year. It was the first time that Google called upon Huawei to make a Nexus smartphone and it certainly won’t be surprising if it does that again.

It’s only speculation right now that Google has decided to drop HTC as the manufacturing partner for this year’s Nexus devices in favor of HTC. Don’t read too much into it until we receive an official confirmation from any of the companies involved. It may be a while before they say something.
