iMacRetina-Hero-PR-PRINTSo while Apple might have updated its MacBook Pro lineup, the question is when will the company update its iMac or Mac Pro lineup?  Or the better question is, will they? It has been pointed out that Apple has kind of neglected its desktop computers for a while now, but the good news is that a refresh could be on its way.

In the latest macOS beta, users on the tonymacx86 forums (via AppleInsider) have discovered some references made to AMD GPUs that has led to speculation that a refresh of the Mac desktops could be on its way. How is this? The AMD GPUs mentioned contain the Polaris 12 name. For those unfamiliar, the Polaris 11 chipset debuted in the AMD GPUs found in the latest MacBook Pros.

This means that Polaris 12 is most likely a successor to the Polaris 11, meaning that we’re probably looking at an unannounced computer from Apple. There is also mention of the Vega 10 which will be based on AMD’s GCN architecture. The AMD “Fury 10” GPU also uses the GCN architecture and is meant for desktop computers.

Now it has been a while since we last saw Apple update its Mac Pro lineup, so there’s a good chance that these new AMD GPUs could find its way into the computer. The iMac is also due for a refresh because last we checked, it has been a little over a year since its last update. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully we’ll have something more concrete to share in the next few weeks or months.
