Instagram recently confirmed that its community is now 800 million strong. Over the past few months, it has introduced new tools and features to ensure that Instagram remains a safe and positive space for self-expression. The company is launching new tools today which include one that enable users to control who comments on their posts.
Starting today, users with public accounts on Instagram can choose who can comment on their posts. They can choose to allow everyone or just groups of people like their followers or people they follow to comment on their posts.
Regardless of whether their account is public or private, users can block other accounts from commenting on their posts. This feature builds up on the filter that Instagram launched in June to block certain offensive comments. That filter only had support for English initially but now it supports French, German, Arabic, and Portuguese language support as well.
Users who spot someone going through a difficult time or in need of support during a live broadcast can now anonymously report the live video to Instagram. That user will then see a message offering help with options to talk to a helpline, a friend, or get other support. Teams are working 24 hours a day around the world to respond to these reports.
Instagram will continue to add more tools down the line to make sure that the environment remains safe and welcoming for all of its users.
