Audi And Porsche To Develop A Common Platform For Electric Cars

Porsche and Audi are just two of the several brands owned by auto giant Volkswagen. The two brands already share car components between them, for example, the Porsche Cayenne and Macan have the same chassis as the Audi Q7 and Q5, and this sharing between the VW-owned brands will continue in the age of electric cars as well. It has been confirmed that Porsche and Audi will co-develop a new platform for electric cars.

Porsche’s Oliver Blume and Audi’s Rupert Stadler revealed in an interview with Stuttgarter Zeitung that the two companies will jointly develop a common electric car platform which will be used for new EVs by 2021.

The companies are aiming to launch several models and vehicle generations based on this common platform in 2021 and beyond. Audi expects to build two sedans and SUVs on this platform while Porsche expects to build at least one.

The two VW-owned brands are jointly working on this project to save money as developing their own individual platforms would be more expensive. With all-electric cars being the future of the automotive industry, they can’t afford not to build a new platform and will thus be able to cut costs by working on one together. They expect that the development would cost the group “a low single-digit billion euro sum” by 2025.
