ATI Radeon HD 4890 and NVIDIA GTX 275 in Close Quarter Combat

ATI Radeon HD 4890 and NVIDIA GTX 275 in Close Quarter Combat

Both graphics companies are throwing new products at each other in a fight that might ultimately be decided by software. We’ll spare you the reading of a 20 pages review: for all practical purposes, these two cards are close enough in performance, although the 4890 seems to have a slight upper-hand in low-resolution (1080p and below), while the GTX 275 seems better for 30″, high-res displays (2560×1600). Both cards will have overclocked versions on the market, although keep in mind that the 4809 is basically an overclocked 4870.

As we said above, software might play a bigger role in what has been a hardware fight for the past decade. Right now, NVIDIA has an edge, a big one, when it comes to GPU computing. With applications like vReveal that can clean your videos, or PhysX that can add tons of physically-animated “stuff” in the next-gen games, we wonder how long ATI hold their ground on the graphics front alone. It looks like NVIDIA has brought a gun to a knife fight.
