Blackberry Locate Service Provides Free Position Info to Developers

Blackberry has just announced a location service that provides an approximate position of the Blackberry device to developers, free of charge (for developers). Because this uses cell tower triangulation rather than GPS, it works indoors – at the expense of a very accurate location. While none of this is new to users, Blackberry thinks that this is important because carriers sometime charge a whole lot of money for this type of information (l heard things like 15cents per query), and in the past, this fee has clearly slowed down progress of things like local mobile advertising or other position-based services. I’m not sure if this is such a big deal these days, but the bottom-line is: more location-based apps for your Blackberry, soon.
