Researchers come up with 1,000-core processor

Not satisfied with the dual-core or quad-core processor inside your computer? Maybe you’d want to think bigger. Scientists out there have created an ultra-fast processor that has 1,000 cores on a single chip, making it about 20 times faster than current desktop computers. Scientists used a chip called a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), which contains millions of transistors. The researcher divided up the transistors in the chip into small groups and asked each to perform a different task and by creating more than 1,000 mini-circuits within the FGPA chip, they effectively turned it into a 1,000-core processor. Despite the number of cores, it’s still much greener than modern machines and uses far less power.
