Bakery goods POS visual recognition system on trial in Japan

YouTube Poster

We previously covered a new scanner that can recognize objects by its appearances, eschewing the need for barcodes. Well, the folks over at Brain Corporation have decided to take it a step further with a new system that can detect baked goods. Because baked goods are made by hand and can vary in appearance, the system has been designed to factor in such problems. In addition to recognizing baked goods, it can also be used to identify any other object in the store.

The system is currently being tested at a bakery outlet in Tokyo, Japan; and if all goes well it should roll out to more places soon. Check out a video of the system in action above, courtesy of Diginfo. Pretty impressive stuff.
