Watch Dogs For Wii U Still Alive And Well Despite Delays

Watch-Dogs-Aiden-PearceEarlier this year it was mentioned that Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs for the Nintendo Wii U had been delayed. In fact some even went as far as suggesting that the game had been cancelled due to the Wii U’s unpopularity, although has since been denied by Ubisoft.

Either way the game’s release date has since been revealed to be for the 27th of May, with the Wii U version still slated for a later date. The good news is that despite the delay and the rumors about the Wii U version being cancelled, Ubisoft has since come forward and reiterated that the game had not been killed off.

According to the game’s senior producer, Dominic Guay (via Polygon), the game is still alive although they have not managed to determine a ship date for it yet, meaning that as far as its shipping date is concerned, it’s still on hold.

Guay later adds, ”We don’t have a specific ship date for it yet so it’s considered within the year. So we’re going to look at that and we’re going to let people know as soon as we figure out an exact date for it.”

So what’s with the delay? Well apparently the Wii U version of the game is not being developed by Ubisoft Montreal. Instead Ubisoft’s studio in Bucharest is the one working on it and that they want to see how the GamePad could be used to its full advantage. The GamePad is one of the more unique features of the Wii U and introduces a second screen to the console, much like Nintendo’s handheld consoles have dual screen functionality as well.

Games like Zombie U took advantage of the second screen which made for a really fun game, so it looks like Ubisoft wants the same for Watch Dogs as well. “The Wii U came along at some point in our production, so it planned through for it, and now to a certain extent we wanted to be ambitious with it, be able to go full-on and make full use of the platform. That’s why we’re taking more time, but it’s being worked on so that’s good.”
