ASUS ZenFone 3 Will Feature USB Type-C

zenfone-2-1The ASUS ZenFone 2 was unveiled earlier this year and it was basically the company’s flagship smartphone. The handset packs some pretty decent and standard hardware. Now if you’re wondering what’s in store for us with the handset’s successor, the ZenFone 3, unfortunately not much is known about it at the moment.

However what we do know is that it will feature USB Type-C connectivity. This was confirmed by the folks at TrustedReviews who managed to score an interview with the company’s chairman Jonney Shih. When asked if the ZenFone 3 would adopt USB Type-C, Shih replied in the affirmative.

According to Shih, “I think Type C is the way to go, frankly speaking. You will see the answer when you see the ZenFone 3.” Shih also explained why the ZenFone 2 did not sport the new USB standard. “Of course you know now the cost, right? For ZenFone, each cent counts right? But we never only think about the cost. We always think about the cost and the value at the same time. So I think it’s more a timing issue, frankly speaking. Yeah, what’s the right timing? We normally want to be a little bit ahead.”

We suppose we shouldn’t really be that surprised. Companies such as Google and OnePlus have put out smartphones that use the USB Type-C connector, and in some instances have even bundled cables that are Type-C to Type-C, indicating that they are preparing for the future. So for ASUS or any other company to adopt the Type-C standard in their future products does seem to be the natural progression of things.
