Apple has pretty much been a pioneer where miniaturization is concerned ever since the iPod made its debut, and in just a decade, we are greeted by both the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 which measure 8.8mm and 9.3mm thick (or rather, should we say thin?), respectively. Just in case you didn’t realize, the iPad 2 is actually thinner than the iPhone 4, now how about that? Of course, one of the limitations would be the 3.5mm audio jack, but fret not – they are working on a patent for that particular problem, which is thinner than even the miniaturized 2.5mm variant. With the document dubbed “Low Profile Plug Receptacle”, it involves three embodiments which would feature interesting physical redesigns of the standard audio jack socket.
