What you see above might actually be a leaked map from Apple’s next update to their hugely popular mobile operating system known as iOS, where it sees action across the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The above has been described as Stamen’s gorgeous Watercolor tiles for OpenStreetMap (CC BY 3.0), and if this were to be the map generated by iOS 6, then it would certainly get the attention of Google’s executives. At point of publishing, the relationship between Cupertino and Google has not exactly been on the best of terms, and Apple intends to carve a niche for itself in the navigation market after purchasing mapping company C3 and will utilize OpenStreetMaps in iPhoto for iOS. Unfortunately, the Apple-designed map tiles are not up to Google Maps’ standards, and the CC licensed tiles from Stamen Maps that you see above might just throw off the kids gloves down the road when iOS 6 arrives. Do you think that the above is an actual iOS 6 map, or is it just a red herring that was leaked on purpose to throw curious folks off the trail?
