During the Android Dev Summit 2026, Google announced the upcoming release of a Quick Share SDK for applications on both Android and iOS. This major update will allow users to transfer files directly from within individual apps, bypassing the traditional system-wide sharing sheet entirely.

As detailed by the company, developers will be able to natively integrate peer-to-peer file sharing and Tap to Share features. Instead of a full-screen interface, initiating a transfer will now display a discreet bottom sheet featuring a content preview. A key highlight of the showcase was seamless cross-platform interoperability, demonstrating direct file transfers between Android and Apple devices and expanding on earlier cross-ecosystem compatibility efforts.

Engineered for efficiency, the new solution is designed to be robust and cost-effective for developers without requiring complex server infrastructure. Google highlights five foundational technical pillars for the SDK:

  • Maximum Security: Complete end-to-end (E2E) encryption for all transfers.
  • High Performance: Low latency paired with maximum transfer speeds.
  • Original Quality: File transmission without mandatory compression.
  • Network Independence: Fully operational offline functionality.
  • Low Cost: Elimination of expensive server maintenance overhead.

While specific system requirements remain unannounced, further details are expected closer to the rollout. The Quick Share SDK is officially scheduled for release sometime during the first half of 2027.
