satya nadellaA few days ago, we reported that according to a Microsoft job listing, it seemed that the Redmond company was entertaining ideas about unifying their operating systems. As it stands, Microsoft has several different operating systems, like Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox, so it will be interesting to see how Microsoft plans on accomplishing it.

However it seems that the job listing was spot on the money because according to a report from Business Insider, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella has confirmed the unification. According to Nadella, Microsoft will “streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system.”

Basically what this means is that Microsoft plans on having one operating system that will cover all screen sizes, at least according to Nadella. Unfortunately Nadella did not detail exactly how Microsoft plans on doing that, but did mention that this will end up benefiting both users and developers as it will lead to the creation of universal apps that will work across all of Microsoft’s devices.

As it stands, Windows Phone is currently lacking apps, at least compared to iOS and Android, so by unifying the platforms, more apps could be made for Windows that would work on Windows Phone, thus making the mobile platform more compelling. It might also explain why Microsoft is trimming away some of their previous efforts, like Android handsets and feature phones.
