It has been said many times before that our smartphones these days are really powerful and they’re essentially computers that fit into our pocket, so with all that power under the hood, why can’t we use it like we would a computer? Well for starters it’s because it hasn’t been designed to be run that way, but that’s where the Andromium Computing Platform comes in.

The goal of Andromium is to allow users to use their phones like they would a computer. It’s both hardware and software. The hardware portion comes in the form of a dock that basically turns your phone into a computer unit, and has USB ports that allows users to attach peripherals like a keyboard, mouse, as well as an external display.

The software portion is the Andromium Computer Platform which offers up a desktop-like UI that users can interact with using their mouse and keyboard. Heck, it’s even been modeled after Windows 7 and OS X, taking the best UI elements from each software and mashing them up into one.

This will allow users to take advantage of the hardware in their phones as well as continue to receive notifications and even phone calls while using it as a desktop! In terms of app compatibility, its creators claim that most apps will work with the platform in addition to Andromium-specific apps.

If this sounds like an awesome idea, the Andromium Computing Platform is currently a Kickstarter project seeking funding, so if you’d like to help, head on over to its Kickstarter page for the details.
