Many analysts believe that the Apple Watch is going to make Swiss watchmakers jump on the smartwatch bandwagon. Some are certainly responding to the growing popularity of smartwatches but for now the Swiss watchmaking industry appears nonplussed. As per a document from the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property, the Apple Watch launch in Switzerland might be delayed due to a patent related issue.

There’s certainly a hint of irony in there somewhere. Apple’s first watch may not be launched on time in the country that’s widely considered to be the home of fine watchmaking, all because of a patent dates back to 1985.

Leonard watch brand owner William Longe is the owner of this patent from 1985 which is reportedly blocking Apple from using the word “apple” or even the image of an apple to sell a watch.

The patent is not due to expire until December 5th after which the Cupertino company will be able to sell its first smartwatch, provided that the patent isn’t renewed.

The wait is almost over for people who have been anxiously waiting for Apple’s first smartwatch to arrive. The company is going to release the Apple Watch in nine regions on April 24th.

It will start taking pre-orders from April 10th. Once the initial launch is underway Apple will add more regions and markets to the list as the days and months roll by.
