There finally might be a product that gives the Raspberry Pi a run for its money, it’s called Chip, and it’s quite literally a computer that only costs $9. In fact, the creators of Chip call it the first $9 computer in the world. Given that it appears to be such an intriguing product Chip has already blown past its funding goal on Kickstarter and is raising quite a lot of money.

Chip has a 1GHz processor with 512MB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. There’s even Wi-Fi built-in as well as Bluetooth to connect peripherals like keyboards. Raspberry Pi is going to have serious component envy.

Granted that this is better off as a dev board but Chip is capable of running full Linux desktop, and then there are several configuration options for folks who want HDMI out or the VGA board for just a little extra money.

You might be wondering how can this board be that cheap? Primarily because its components are what you’ll find in a cheap Chinese tablet, the Allwinner 1GHz SoC is proof of that.

The creators were looking to raise $50,000 but already they’ve blown past $900,000 with some 25 days still to go. Pledge $9 to reserve a Chip board for yourself, which will start shipping in January 2016.
