Sprint is rolling out a new software update for last year’s flagship HTC handset, the software update brings a crucial fix for the popular Stagefright vulnerability. It goes without saying that HTC One M8 owners on Sprint should waste no time in downloading and installing this update as soon as it goes live for them, the Stagefright vulnerability is no joke and they will certainly be better off without it existing in their smartphone.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Stagefright was disclosed to the public. This security vulnerability in Android can be exploited by an attacker to gain access to a target’s device after which data can be stolen and even the microphone and camera can be remotely controlled.

The exploit takes advantage of how Hangouts processes videos in MMS messages without needing any input from the user, the attacker only has to put the malicious code inside the video and send the infected MMS to the target who won’t even know that the device has automatically processed the video and now it’s infected.

Sprint’s latest update for HTC One M8 brings up the software version to 4.25.651.18, there aren’t any major or minor changes included in this update except for the Stagefright patch, HTC One M8 owners on Sprint shouldn’t waste any time in jumping on it as soon as it lands.
