twitter logoTwitter, just like Instagram and Facebook, lets you follow other users. These users might be your friends, family, celebrities, brands, news outlets, and so on, and by following you basically get to see whenever a new status has been posted. However prior to this, Twitter only allowed users to have a cap of 2,000 follows.

However according to a recent tweet by Twitter Support, they have since raised the limit to 5,000. According to Twitter, “Starting today, we are increasing our current follow limit from 2,000 to 5,000 accounts for all users.” Now some of you guys might be a bit confused as there are definitely users out there who might be following more than 2,000 or 5,000 users prior to this increase.

So what’s the difference? According to the Twitter support page, you can go beyond the 5,000 mark but after 5,000, how many more users you can follow will depend on how many users are following you. “Once you’ve followed 5,000 users, there are limits to the number of additional users you can follow. This number is different for each account and is based on your ratio of followers to following; this ratio is not published. Follow limits cannot be lifted by Twitter and everyone is subject to limits, even high profile and API accounts.”

This measure has been put in place presumably to prevent spam bots. Twitter also notes that the maximum number of people you can follow a day is 1,000, which once again was put into place to prevent spam accounts from abusing the system.
