samsung 3d tvWhile 3D movies are still watched by many audiences around the world, the desire to own a 3D TV set at home isn’t quite at those levels. In fact several years ago, several OEMs bet it big that 3D smartphones would be all the rage, which we supposed made sense given how people reacted to movies like Avatar, and gaming consoles like the Nintendo 3DS.

However like we said, 3D TVs never really caught on (and neither did monitors) which is why according to a report from ETNews (via What Hi-Fi), both LG and Samsung are reportedly planning to phase out production of their 3D TVs. While there are other companies who manufacture 3D displays, both LG and Samsung are two of the bigger players in the market, and if they are pulling out, it definitely does not sound like 3D TVs will be around for much longer.

According to an LG executive quoted in the report, “Although 40% of all TVs last year had 3D functions, only 20% of TVs this year will have 3D function… because there are still consumers who enjoy 3D movies, we are going to apply 3D mainly to premium products.” As for Samsung, the report claims that the company has not placed any orders for 3D glasses, and that the company will no longer be adding 3D technology to future devices.

Since neither LG nor Samsung have officially announced their plans, take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think of it anyway? Is it really a stretch to think that LG and Samsung could be considering giving up on 3D TVs?
