mi-4c-explodeWith the alarming increase in reports of smartphones exploding, the development of safer batteries could not come any sooner. However until that happens, it certainly does evoke a feel that we’re all walking around with potential bombs in our pockets, and while the focus does seem to be on Samsung and the Galaxy Note 7, other brands seem to be experiencing it too.

According to the latest reports, it would seem that a Xiaomi Mi 4c has exploded in the back pocket of its owner. In the image above, which is allegedly from a security camera, it shows a man with what appears to be smoke coming out of his pants, and a lady behind try desperately trying to put out what could be a fire.

Xiaomi has yet to officially comment on the report, but apparently the explosion was serious enough to cause third degree burns on the hips of the phone’s owner. The wound (which you can see for yourself on GizChina) does look to be rather gruesome. It is unclear as to how the phone might have exploded since it probably wasn’t charging in his pocket.

It has been speculated that maybe the owner might have sat on his phone, which in turn might have damaged the phone’s battery leading to it exploding. In the past we have seen how lithium-ion batteries when damaged can swell up and explode, so that is a possibility.
