itunes on macbookThe iTunes App Store is owned and controlled by Apple, in which developers, musicians, movie studios, and more can upload their creations where it can be purchased and downloaded by users of Apple’s products. Recently it seems that consumers aren’t too thrilled about Apple’s monopoly over its iPhone apps.

So much so that a class-action lawsuit has been filed against Apple claiming that they tried to monopolize the market for iPhone apps between 2007 to 2013. These consumers are claiming that Apple made it so that apps for iOS devices must be sold through the iTunes App Store, as opposed to giving customers and developers the option of selling it from third-party websites or platforms. This practice allegedly violates antitrust laws.

They also claim that this has affected the price of apps, especially since Apple requires a 30% cut, which in turn has led to some developers charging more for apps to make up for the difference. If this case sounds familiar, it is because it was actually filed a while ago when the California Northern District Court threw out the case in 2013.

However the decision was successfully appealed and the appeals court has since reversed that decision, thus requiring Apple to face these antitrust allegations. Apple has since declined to comment on the court’s decision.
