It has been rumored for a while now that the iPhone 8 could come with wireless charging capabilities. In fact there has been evidence of that as Apple has recently joined the WPC, thus fueling rumors that wireless charging will indeed be part of the iPhone 8’s features. However according to JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur, that might not necessarily be the case.

According to a report from CNBC, Sur claims that Apple and Broadcom have both been working together on wireless charging features for the iPhone for the past few years now. Sur claims that this is why Apple could adopt a glass back cover for the iPhone as it would help with wireless charging as there is less interference compared to a metal case.

Sur writes, “We believe the glass back cover is conducive to wireless charging as it reduces signal interference versus a metal casing. It is possible for Apple to add proprietary features such as fast charging or extended charging to differentiate itself from the pack and enhance the value of its own hardware ecosystem.”

However Sur believes that there is a possibility that wireless charging could still skip this year’s iPhone and instead be saved for next year’s handset. Apparently this is due to the increased safety concerns following Samsung’s recall of the Galaxy Note 7. Safe to say that this should be taken with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll have to wait and see for ourselves when Apple does make the official announcement later this year.
