It was first rumored back in 2015 that Xiaomi was thinking about making its own processors for mobile devices. The company currently sources processors from other manufacturers so given it’s rising position in the smartphone market, it would do the company well if it could break into the semiconductor business as well. A new report suggests that Xiaomi is going to release its first “Pinecone” series processor later this month.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Xiaomi is going to introduce the first processor from its Pinecone series later this month with the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5c handset.

Once processor manufacturer Leadcore announced a partnership with Xiaomi back in 2015, it was expected that the company was moving into semiconductor design, and it appears that Xiaomi is finally ready to debut its Pinecone series.

If this is true, Xiaomi might finally be able to break its reliance on the likes of MediaTek and Qualcomm from which it currently sources processors. It will also help the company better integrate its hardware and software. Xiaomi will also be able to differentiate its products from many of its Chinese rivals who are rapidly catching up.

Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed anything officially as yet so far which is why it would be best to take this report with a grain of salt at least for now.
