Xbox One X Console Controller Gray Shadow

At E3 2017, Microsoft finally took the wraps off the Xbox One X which was formerly known as Project Scorpio. They also revealed the pricing of the console which was set at $499, a price that Microsoft appears to be pretty proud of. However it seems that despite being priced much higher than the competition, it doesn’t seem like Microsoft will be raking in the big bucks.

Speaking to Business Insider, Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirmed that the company would not be profiting from Xbox One X sales. When asked if this meant that Microsoft will be making a loss, Spencer replied that wasn’t what he meant, but declined to provide further details, but it seems that Microsoft is banking on customers purchasing games and subscribing to services to make money.

According to Spencer, “I don’t want to get into all the numbers, but in aggregate you should think about the hardware part of the console business is not the money-making part of the business. The money-making part is in selling games.” One of the key features of the Xbox One X is that it can run games in 4K at 60fps, and a recent screenshot of Minecraft in 4K shows off how great games could look.

In any case it remains to be seen if gamers will react favorably to the Xbox One X when it is released later this year on the 7th of November.
