Sharp Introduces Its First 100GB BDXL Blu-ray Disc

The BDXL specification was finalized a little while ago, but Sharp has decided that it’s ready to churn out some high-capacity discs, as the company’s latest VR-100BR1 triple-layer discs will sport a juicy 100GB worth of data storage capacity. If that isn’t enough for you, word is that the company will be following up rather quickly with a quad-layer disc that’s good for 128GB. The downside is that new technology always comes at a price, and in this case, we’re talking about 5,000 Yen per disc, that works out to be $57. A couple of these discs, and you’ll be able to buy yourself a nice portable hard drive instead. Regardless of the price, we’re quite happy to see high capacity discs start to show up, and hopefully the price will drop to a more reasonable level sooner rather than later.
