Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread is now the dominant Android version

We’ve seen the Android operating system go through a number of delicious iterations, and here are the official statistics concerning Android 2.3 Gingerbread – it is now officially the most dominant Android version in the market, eclipsing its predecessor, Froyo (version 2.2), for the first time. Arriving at this stage certainly took some time – which was nearly one year after Gingerbread was released alongside the spanking new Google Nexus S smartphone.

To summarize things up, Gingerbread now commands a 44.4% combined share, where it will also include the incremental updates between the Android 2.3 and Android 2.3.7 releases, which is a good 6% more than last month’s 38.7%. As for Google’s Android 2.2 Froyo software, it has not slipped into obscurity at all – far from it, as it still retains a 40.7% share.

As for Android 2.1 Eclair, that is a fading force, holding a 10.7% share of devices that access the Android Market.
