SD Association works on new smart card apps for SD memory cards

The humble SD memory card has certainly come a long way from its early beginnings, and now we have word from the SD Association that they will be extending the utility of its world-leading memory card standards. How so, you ask? For starters, how about a spanking new strategy that will see them work alongside GlobalPlatform so that smart-chip technology in SD standards will allow phones as well as other portable consumer electronics devices to provide authentication services using nothing but SD memory cards?

GlobalPlatform is a company that standardizes in secure application management, and the SD Association is said to work hand in hand to jointly build a secure, open, dynamic environment for deploying secure services in connected devices which uphold SD standards. Basically in layman’s language, this would mean standardized authentication services making their way to microSD and full-size SD memory cards in order to introduce a “mobile wallet” function to one’s smartphone.

Cashless currency and paperless identification might be deemed by some as a move towards the end times, but I see it more as convenience’s sake. Perhaps the scenario in “In Time” might even unfold when the world economies collapse like a stack of dominos, but for the moment, we are pretty stoked at what the SD Association has in store for the immediate future.
