Leica M Monochrom takes monochromatic photos for $8,000

Leica has never been known to put out cheap cameras so we guess we weren’t surprised to discover that Leica’s recently unveiled M Monochrom came with a price tag of $8,000. Yes that’s right, you’ll be plonking down $8,000 of your hard earned money for a camera that only shoots monochromatic photos. Of course given Leica’s brand name and reputation, we guess that there is some level of quality that one can expect from their cameras.

So what can you expect for $8,000? For starters the M Monochrom will be an 18-megapixel full-frame camera that offers top ISO settings of 10,000. It will be constructed from a variety of materials such as magnesium alloy with hints of brass and chrome, and will feature a 2.5” 230k-dot color (yes we know the irony) LCD, a rangefinder-type optical viewfinder and a 14-bit uncompressed RAW mode which we’re sure professional photographers can appreciate.

Given that there is no color involved in the photo taking process, the resulting photos should be, on paper, extremely crisp and sharp, but since we haven’t tried it out for ourselves, we can’t attest to its quality. So, anyone planning on forking out $8,000 for the Leica M Monochrom?
