Basic Nintendo Wii U specs revealed

Prior to the Nintendo Wii U’s launch (again) at E3 2012, many were speculating as to what sort of specs the gaming console will be packing under the hood. There were several rumors but Nintendo has officially outed some of the specs of their upcoming console. According to what we reported last year, it seems that Nintendo did not make many changes, at least none in a major way (its GamePad’s redesign was probably the most notable). As expected, it will be powered by an IBM Power-based multi-core processor and its GPU will be an AMD Radeon-based High Definition GPU. Unfortunately for those looking for numbers to crunch, Nintendo did not reveal those, which we guess much like Apple, they’d rather focus on the gameplay rather than confuse the layman with technical hardware details.

For those looking for Gamecube compatibility, it seems that unlike its predecessor, the Wii U will not offer Gamecube support although there are Gamecube ported games available on the “New Play Control” range, so there’s some consolation there. It will also not be able to support DVD or Blu-ray discs but gamers looking to take a break from gaming and watch some videos, users will be able to stream 1080p videos via Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and Amazon Video.
