Sony announced its 1.51 firmware update for the PlayStation 4 was coming soon, which lead us to believe that we could be seeing the update coming to our next-generation consoles as early as the end of the week. We had no idea Sony’s definition of “soon” meant in a matter of hours as Sony has just flipped the switch and made the PlayStation 4’s 1.51 firmware update available to download.

The PlayStation Blog notes the 1.51 firmware update improves a few elements of the PlayStation 4’s user interface, such as the ability to clearly indicate when a user downloads a game and a game patch at the same time, as well as stabilizing the operating environment.

If you have your PlayStation 4 in stand-by mode, you can expect the 1.51 firmware to already be downloaded onto your console, ready to be installed once you return to it. If you don’t have your PlayStation 4 in stand-by mode, you will receive a prompt the next time you turn on your console informing you the update is being downloaded. If this is your current situation, we recommend you get with the next-generation of gaming and leave your PlayStation 4 in stand-by mode at all times. It’s what all the cool kids are doing these days.
