Dell Cast Announced

dell-castIt looks like Dell has started to diversify their portfolio of devices by coming up with something that one would not have thought about before, moving away from the notebook, desktop, smartphone and tablet industries to deliver a plug-in device which will keep your TV company. Known as the Dell Cast, this particular device is capable of streaming content from one of Dell’s Android-powered tablets all the way to a compatible TV, and it is also accompanied by a price tag of $80.

Having been approved by the FCC as reported earlier this week, the Dell Cast is going to cost slightly more than double that of the Google Chromecast, and for good reason, too. After all, there would be no point in releasing a device that does just about the same thing as another in the market, if it were to sport similar functions and capabilities, right?

The Dell Cast will feature Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth connectivity, where it would enable one to hook up to a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. The whole idea behind this is to plug the Dell Cast stick into an available HDMI port on your TV, before connecting it to a power source via a micro USB cable, and then making use of the Dell Cast app on one of Dell’s tablets so that it will be able to stream videos of your choice to a TV.

Entertainment is not all the Dell Cast is good at, as there is also a productivity mode which would pave the way for a custom, desktop-style home screen as well as access to all of the apps on your smartphone. This means you have the license to run productivity software, surf the Internet or work as though you were on a desktop – and not a tablet or TV. All of the apps, however, will still run from the tablet.

Right now, the Dell Cast will play nice with select Dell Venue and Venue tablets which run on Android, and there is a possibility that support for Dell’s Windows-powered tablets might be thrown into the mix eventually.
