Google Pulling Google Wallet API For Digital Goods Come March 2015

googlwalletRight now Google Wallet can be used to make all sorts of purchases. You can use it to make purchases at a retail store by tapping your phone against the terminal, much like you would with Apple Pay. It can also be used to make in-app purchases, online purchases, and purchases of digital content.

However it seems that Google has decided to do away with that last feature. According to a post on the Google Wallet support page, the company has announced that they will be ending digital purchases using Google Wallet. Google will be giving merchants until the 2nd of March 2015 to adjust their apps and find an alternative solution.

According to Google, “When we first launched Google Wallet for digital goods, we wanted to make it simple for users and merchants to buy and sell online. The industry has matured a lot since then, providing a number of alternative payment solutions to choose from.” This almost sounds like Google might be giving way to the competition, at least on this particular front.

It should be noted that this only affects digital purchases, like subscribing to digital magazines being one of them. So if you don’t use Google Wallet for those kinds of payments, this shouldn’t really affect you. App purchases, in-app purchases, online purchases, and retail purchases are expected to remain unchanged.
