Google Acquires Odysee, A Photo Backup And Sharing App

Say you have photos that you want to keep private or perhaps you just want to share them with a select group of people, like family members or close friends. Now there are plenty of alternatives out there available at the moment, but it seems that out of all of them, Google has decided to acquire one called Odysee.

For those unfamiliar with the app, it is an iOS and Android app that allows photos taken on their smartphones or tablets to be automatically backed up on their computers. It also allows users to setup private sharing of photos with other people that you have selected, and it also came with an API that could be integrated into other apps.

According to a message on its website, “We are excited to share that the Odysee Platform Team will be joining the Google+ Team. Odysee’s vision was to be the easiest way for everyone to capture unlimited memories and access them everywhere. We are very excited to join Google where we’ll continue to focus on building amazing products that people love. Our deepest thanks to every one of our users. To help you with the transition, the Odysee service will continue till Feb 23rd and soon after that all your photos and videos will be available as a downloadable archive.”

It is unclear as to what Google has planned for the app, but given that they are shutting it down, it seems to reaffirm earlier rumors which suggested that Google could be thinking of spinning Google+’s Photos off into its own standalone service and might be using Odysee’s technology and services as part of it.
